- International Roster of Musicians Interprets Darkly Whimsical Love Song On Valentine’s Day Release From Award-winning DFTBA Records.
CHICAGO, Illinois— 1 February 2010 Chicago-based indie label, DFTBA Records announces that MC Lars will lead off a Valentine’s Day release of six new cover versions of their popular YouTube hit, “Can’t.”

Packaged on a thumb-sized USB memory drive, the physical release from dftba.com also includes the original source tracks so that listeners can create their own mash-ups and remixes at home.
From its very beginning, this innovative project showcases the dramatic new landscape for creating and distributing music. The lead track is from “post-punk laptop rapper” MC Lars, whose 2006 hit, “Download this Song,” celebrates the disruptive revolution that has transformed the music industry.
The song itself is the product of two musicians who had never met except online. Working in a transatlantic collaboration, lyricist Alan Lastufka, (based near Chicago, Illinois) and composer Tom Milsom, (based near London, England) joined to complete “Cant,” a song that Lastufka had started writing a decade earlier. With Milsom’s vocals and production, the song was promoted through YouTube and released in 2009 both on disk and iTunes.
On YouTube, the video for “Can’t” has been viewed more than half a million times and covered by musicians using everything from simple ukulele strums to sophisticated multi-track recording software.
Lastufka is not only the lyricist of “Can’t,” but also the manager and co-owner of the DFTBA label. For the upcoming Valentine’s Day release he provided the original source tracks to a select group of musicians prominent on YouTube giving them free reign to re-imagine the song in their own styles. “I was blown away as the various remixes came in,” said Lastufka, adding, “I can’t wait to hear what other listeners do with these source files.”
Signaling its insider Internet roots, the collection is labeled in a thinly-disguised coded combination of letters and numbers popular within the early hacker community, “C4N'7 R3M1X35” (“CAN”T REMIXES”). It will be available on Valentine's Day 2010 in a limited edition USB drive (with the original studio multitracks), on CD, and iTunes.
